Scarves 101

So you may remember in our Layering post that one of Elizabeth's favorite fall accessories is a scarf. We're not talking about the wool one you bundle up with, but a scarf that is part of your look. Elizabeth has a lot of scarves- not as much as she has makeup, but a LOT. Like booties, she finds them to be versatile and a great addition to an outfit, but not something she (or any of us) actually reach for very often. If you too have thought you'd like to incorporate scarves into your wardrobe, here are some suggestions.

Scarves can add a pop of color and/or pattern to an otherwise plain outfit. They can also tie an outfit together by combining all the colors you are wearing into one piece. Think of them as a substitute for a necklace with the bonus of keeping you warm when there is a slight nip in the air, or the office A/C is too much for you.

There are a myriad of ways to tie a scarf, and to be honest, the written directions are hard to follow, so rather than try, watch this video. You will have 25 ideas on how to style a scarf that are easy to replicate. Then take a look at the links below for some great affordable scarves! One of Elizabeth's favorites was a Target find, so you don't need to spend hundreds on a Burberry or Hermes scarf (but you totally can- we support it). Elizabeth thinks it's good to have a solid neutral scarf and then go for patterns. The pattern-shy among you can take comfort that the scarf offers a small dose, unlike committing to an overall pattern on your pants, etc.. Also, a large pattern that you would never go for ordinarily will look totally chic wrapped around your neck where the full design isn't really seen. So be brave.

Need some recommendations?

Old Navy has a ton of colors and patterns for a great price. Our suggestion: go with the leopard. You already know how to accessorize with leopard shoes. Try it out around your neck for some unexpected style.

Above we recommended a neutral. Here is a great choice because it combines several neutral colors, making it incredibly versatile.

This is a beautiful choice that is great for transition dressing- play up the burgundy, navy, and olive in the fall. When the temperatures rise, it will be beautiful with white or mint.

Here is another reasonably priced option that you can easily transition. Remember that when its tied, you won't see the concrete shapes, more just colors.

This last one is just too bright and cheery not to recommend.

Workout Wednesday: The Push-up

We wanted to take today to discuss the benefits of one of the most useful (and hated) of all exercises: the push-up.  First off, why should you even care? It's a great exercise to do any time, any where. No equipment needed. It targets multiple muscle groups. Get a lot of bang for your workout buck. This is really 2b: It's good for your core. A strong core improves your posture and can help prevent lower back pain (something you will struggle with if you sit a lot during the day and as you're getting older).  Calorie-torching! (Let's call this one "2c".) Because you're using so many muscle groups, you burn more calories with a push-up than you will for other strength exercises that involve only one muscle. (Want to burn even more calories? Do a burpee- a push-up and a squat jump. They're awful. Katie 1 says that Katie 2, the primary author of this post, is evil for even mentioning burpees.) They can be done no matter your fitness level. Yo...

Sweater Weather

The time is upon us! There are a million ways we could divide up our recommendations for you today, but we've decided to go with just a few that are realistic needs for working women. That being said, we think everyone should invest in (at least a few) great cashmere sweaters. You don't have to spend an arm and a leg, either. Neiman Marcus Last Call and Lands' End ( yes, we really do love it ) offer some of the best cashmere for your buck. Wear to Work:  Because this is kind of the whole point of the blog... This might be the best recommendation we have for you. It's a completely basic crew neck sweater that is 100% cashmere. Oh, and it 's only $100. And it comes in 13 colors. Seriously. It doesn't get much better.  Katie 2 LOVES a turtleneck. She loved them in the late 80s and early 90s under her oversized sweaters and she loves them now. We don't like to recommend obvious places to shop, but Banana has been doing the classic turtleneck for years ...

It's 1,000 Degrees Outside- How to Stay Professional When It's Hotter Than Hell

Summer finally decided to arrive in Chicago. With highs in the 90s and 1,000,000% humidity, getting dressed for work in the morning was all sorts of fun. Which is probably a good thing for the three of you that read our blog. Why? Because it gives us content. Welcome to our guide for how to dress professionally for hot weather, because nothing says "Trust me, I'm a professional!" more than sweat stains and melting makeup. Here's what we have found that works for us: Clothing:  (The realm of the Katies) We're big fans of light, breathable fabrics on really hot days. Think cottons, light poly/rayon blends, ponte. We're particularly fond of cotton blend pencil skirts, full skirts, and ponte dresses. Cotton suiting is also worth a mention. For example, today Katie 1 wore this color block ponte sheath dress. We find this dress to be perfect for hot weather because the ponte fabric is breathable, comfortable, machine washable, and maintains its shape ev...
