Shoes Day Tuesday: Espadrilles

We are longingly remembering the days when February meant spring break. When the monotony of every day life was interrupted by trips to far off places full of sunshine and tequila shots. Even if you didn't ever go anywhere spring breaky, that week off during the dreary days was a welcome distraction from the dull, grey every day.  Last year at this time, Katie 2 was doing some last minute shopping for a trip to Hawaii. She pulled Katie 1 along and the two of them passed the time looking for the perfect nude wedges/sundresses/sun hats. This year, there is no trip to warmer climates on the horizon for any of us (Katie 1 is taking a ski vacation), but we still like to break the monotony of winter blues by shopping for the must-have shoe for tropical vacations, the espadrille. We also think this post is a great Shoes Day Tuesday/Travel Tuesday crossover. Win win! Frugal (Under $100) There are a ton of cute options in the frugal price point. For starters, these come in...

How to Test Drive New Brands Prior to Purchasing

With the rise of the Internet and the increasing space occupied by fashion bloggers,  we are frequently shown the wares of online only retailers or are being introduced to new brands.  From clothing to skincare, online-only outlets are the new normal in our increasingly digital lives. This leads us to an interesting conundrum: how to sort though and assess the quality of products that we cannot see and feel prior to purchasing (since we know that the recommendations contained in a #sponsored #ad blog post can't be trusted). Because we're Real Working Girls with Real Working Incomes, we want to know about the quality of the product that we're purchasing before we get it home. We've also gotten burned more than a few times when it comes to online shopping. We're pretty sure we're not alone in our experiences, so let us share our tips for researching new brands and retailers prior to purchasing.  It's worth noting that our tips go beyond purchasing clothing...

Workout Wednesday: Let's Discuss that NYT Article

By know we've all read (or read about) that New York Times  opinion piece shaming women for wearing anything other than sweatpants to the gym. We're not going to link to it here because we don't want to send additional traffic to the website; however, THIS article from Jezebel  sums the article up quite nicely (make sure to check out the comments, they're gold). In short, the author of the opinion piece wears sweatpants to the gym, doesn't see anyone else wearing them and then proceeds to shame women for (1) wanting to look nice in their workout clothing; and (2) wearing anything other than baggy sweats to the gym. The article also cultivates the very thing that the author claims the proliferation of the yoga pants culture seems to cultivate: it shames women for dressing how they want, when they want.  The overarching theme of women shaming aside (because we don't have the time to go into that), most of the points that the author makes in the article are jus...

Making the Most of a Day Off

It’s pretty great working for a bank. For one, banker’s hours. Another? Vacation time. We have never worked jobs with more vacation time per year than banks offer. Third: federal holidays. In addition to our generous vacation benefits, bank employees get to take off the occasional odd day throughout the year (January, February, May, July, September, October, November) in addition to traditional holidays. There are all kinds of people and therefore plenty of different ways to take advantage of a day off of work. Maybe you're the type to take a little  vacation. Maybe you're the type who wants to sleep in and watch the Price is Right in your pajamas like when you were a kid. Or maybe you're the person who gets up at the same time as you would if you were going to work and you run a million errands and put the rest of us to shame. But if you're like us and don't have glamorous plans to go out of town (or you're not dying of the plague like Katie 1 and Elizabe...

More Ways to Beat the Winter Blues

We've talked about beating the post-holiday funk   and shown you some fun shoes to spice up your life. What we haven't talked about is that you can stick to your resolution to pay off some bills and still get some new pieces and make life a little more exciting. Everyone knows that there are some killer sales at the start of the year, but if you're like most people, in early January you just got some new stuff for the holidays and your bank account is a little smaller than you'd like. So we're here to let you know that now is the perfect time to get back in the shopping game and stock up on some pieces that are still on sale. Our best recommendation? Go back and check out our guide to winter coats . February is the best time to pick up a piece you've been lusting after. You can wear it for a little longer this season, or put it away and break it out next November!

Shoes Day Tuesday: You Need to Buy New Shoes Today

We have a very special Shoes Day Tuesday for you today. Why? Because the Lunar New Year is this Friday, February 16th. Many moons ago (HAHAHAH, see what we did there?), Katie 2 had a friend who explained that it was tradition to wear new shoes on the Lunar New Year, as a way to avoid carrying the dirt from last year into the new year. We went online to try and find confirmation of this tradition and found none. But we decided to write about it anyway. Why? Because it's Shoes Day Tuesday. Because we love the idea of celebrating a holiday with new shoes. Because when we asked an Asian friend of ours if this was in fact a thing, she said "That sounds like an Asian thing to do, so I say 'yes'!" Because apparently it's bad luck to buy said new shoes too close to the actual holiday. (Don't ask us why, but apparently it's bad luck to do a lot of stuff too close to the Lunar New Year, such as clean your house or cut your hair.) So our post today is ...

Desk to Dinner Valentine's Day Edition

It's that time of year where every blogger ever posts their Valentine's Day recommendations. So here we are jumping on that bandwagon with this edition of desk to dinner dressing. While our previous desk to dinner (check it out HERE ) focused on dressing down office attire for an after work sporting event or concert, this edition of desk to dinner will provide recommendations for a variety of Valentine's Day dates at varying levels of formality (starting with the fanciest and getting more casual).  Fancy Night Out:  Honestly, this is the area where we have the least experience when it comes to Valentine's Day but we'll do our best. Also to be fair, dress codes, even at fancy restaurants have gotten way more casual, so you're probably fine in whatever you wore to work.  But we digress. Plus, it's Valentine's Day so you should be at least a little festive? Allegedly? Maybe don't wear all black?  Anyway, this portion of the post is probably...

Workout Wednesday: Can You Work Out at Lunch?

This was a topic that we have wanted to write about for some time. For one, we know quite a few people that work out during their lunch hour (and not just men) and we've always been impressed by their ability to do so. We also know that working out in the morning  either is your thing or it isn't (for us it really isn't, as much as we try). And getting your sweat on after work can be difficult either because you end up working late, or you have to get dinner on the table (or, let's be honest, you just want to have a cocktail instead). We starting asking ourselves if we could possibly get in a workout on our lunch break, so *we decided to try it. (*The Katies. Elizabeth chose not to participate. We will explain below.) Why are we trying it? Because we like The Try Guys. Oh, and because we are #dedicated to answering all your questions that we make up ourselves because you don't really ask us any. (We know you're out there! We see the page views!!) We've ...

Box Hair Color - Yes or No?

We haven't talked about hair in a while (in fact, last time we discussed it was HERE when we talked about how much we spend), so today seems like a good time to revisit the topic. You may recall that in our last hair discussion, Katie 1 mentioned that she colors her own hair approximately every 3 months (in reality it ends up being about every 6 months but whatever). She also occasionally falls into YouTube beauty rabbit holes (it was DIY Charcoal masks for awhile) and her most recent obsession is YouTube hair color tutorials because they are fascinating and weirdly calming. Thus, this post is very well timed.  So... we've rambled a little bit about home hair color and YouTube, what does that have to do with this post? Glad you asked. As it so happens, Katie 1 also had a haircut on Saturday and was discussing her recent hair related YouTube obsession with her stylist, Kassi. This discussion lead to the inevitable question: What do professionals think about at home hair co...

Ask the Expert: Winter Edition

If you are a regular reader, you probably know by now that Elizabeth is our resident make-up/beauty expert and that the Katies often go to her with all of their skincare questions. We decided to exploit her knowledge with a periodic "Ask the Expert" series on the blog. You may recall that the first edition of this series was posted back in November (if you missed the first edition, you can check it out HERE ).  Given that winter brings about a host of skincare issues, we decided that it was time we took advantage of Elizabeth's extensive knowledge and featured a new round of Ask the Expert questions.  Just like we did with Round 1, we take this opportunity to formally invite you to shoot a question either in the comments or on our Instagram (we should probably let you email us, but I don't think any of us have ever actually checked our blog's email) that you would like our expert to answer. Of course, we are experts in most things, but if you have some sort o...
